Supercharge Your Facebook Experience With Boost & Facebook Lite!

I have an account on Facebook and needless to say, I often use Firefox to browse Facebook since it's virtually my top browser to use now. However, i hate some of the way Facebook is run and managed. There are some features that users are not being able to control and change, for example, eliminating those annoying flash ads which only slows down the page loading process. I also find Facebook a little lacking on the customization side which differentiates it so much from Friendster and Myspace that are more customizable. Most recently i also discovered that Facebook is getting more and more slower on my machine. After some searching and testing, here are two pretty effective solutions to the above problems:



1. Boost


Boost is a free Firefox add-on developed by StudioBoost which allows users to customize their Facebook via Mozilla Firefox with 300+ skins, 30+ features, rollover pics, selectable options, one-click pokes, video downloader and many more. There are also other enhancements, for example, the option of refreshing the Home page of Facebook at selected intervals, options for downloading videos on Facebook, disable display banners and ads and even an auto image-magnifying option when you mouse-over an image.

Boost works with Firefox v3.5 and above and is completely freeware with no adware bundled. It is still currently in beta stage and so you can expect a few minor stability issues. As a user of Boost, i would strongly recommend that users disable some of the beta features of Boost if it is making your Firefox lag. Other than that, Boost works as advertised.

2. Facebook Lite

Facebook Lite is essentially the lighter version of Facebook. It offers the basic functionality while trimming out or getting some of the lesser-used features out of the way, making stuffs such as page loading and navigation easier and smoother. My experience with Facebook improved a lot better after i used and compared the lite version with the original version.

There are no limitations to accessing the lite version of Facebook. Simply access Facebook Lite now and feel the difference yourself!.

RARZilla Helps Users Without WinRAR Decompress RAR files.

I was surprised that none of my friends know this very fine and easy-to-use tools, when people on the web are literally spreading it like wildfire on the internet, covering it in blogs, recommending it on sites they’ve been to. So just to spread the good news, I decided I had to write about it somehow.

RarZilla is a free, independently developed decompression tool for extracting contents of WinRAR files. Consider this: WinRAR is not a freeware tool and some users might not have WinRAR installed on their PC. Other compression software might be able to open RAR files but similarly, they might come at a need to pay. This is where RARZilla comes into play.

RarZilla Free Unrar is designed specifically for RAR archives that support spanned archives as well as the extraction of password-protected files. Decompression can be started by drag-and-drop, double click or shell integrated context menu. To speed the whole process up, RarZilla has the option to define a default output folder or a default password or both. By default the files are extracted to the folder that the RAR file is in. However, if you have defined a default output folder, the files are extracted to that folder.

Another powerful feature of RarZilla is the ability of decompressing multiple files that have been purposely split when being compressed. They are usually movies or software files which size are very large, at times over 1 GB in size. Once users had downloaded all the parts of the RAR files, just decompress the first RAR file and RarZilla will automatically search for and decompress the remaining RAR part files in order until all files are decompressed and extracted. 

In short, RarZilla is a must-know tool for those who do not have a copy of WinRAR onboard their PC yet download or receive RAR files on a regular basis. In fact, I would say that most people nowadays are running RAR files everywhere, so having RarZilla installed has somehow became a necessity.

I could not post in recent few days. The reason was busyness and illness. I am suffering bad cough. Let's see when medicines will effect me. BTW, during this time, I was planning for my near coming short period of future. If you are looking for something very fancy and colorful with useless colorful and fancy illustrations, stop here, this is not for you. But, if you are looking for a mind mapping software which is handy to use, easy to understand and following Usability and Accessibility rules, yes, this is for you: FreeMind.

It has just two panels; one at top and the other is at left side. Of course, there is main menu to operate FreeMind to it full extent. You can use it in your studies, projects, brainstorming, business, events, decision making, planning, and just for fun, too.

Weak spots:

• The support of pictures in nodes is in preliminary stage. When you want to carry a map around with you, you have to take care that you take the image files with you.
• FreeMind is basically one user application. Although users can in principle work on the same map, there is only preliminary locking mechanism to prevent conflicts, at the time, switched off by default.
• In rare cases, following of HTML links in the web browser does not work on some computers; the same holds for opening local files.
• Limited support for fancy graphics.

I was wandering aimlessly around the web (apparently wasting my time again) when i came across this very encouraging beta offer from Bullguard Security Team. Although i know Bullguard & its line of Internet Security products for some time, i admit that i have long thought that the company is no longer operational, because there are just no news that surfaced about them anywhere on the web.

Freewares From the Aviassin Project!

I have been thinking for a long time whether I should just handpick one of Aviassin’s software to write on, but later decided that it would be appropriate to mention all software, since all software are interesting, plus Aviassin is an open freeware project, meaning that all levels of users can participate in the development of these software.
 
The Aviassin Project is actually a team of software developers dedicating themselves to creating innovative new software free for use, simply because they, like us, hate big companies charging software that should be free. The development team stressed that no spywares and adwares are bundled with their products, which I deemed quite true after trying all their software myself, and they also stated that they will continue developing new software apart from their current software projects.

Here is a list of their currently available and developing software:

1.    Superbar Savior

 
Superbar Saviour is a small application for Windows 7 which aims to fix issues or enhance functionality of the current Windows 7 Superbar. It can be used with the taskbar on any side of the screen and with any taskbar size. Only a tiny amount of RAM & CPU power is used, so it will not noticeably affect PC performance while open. Users can do a lot of things with Superbar Savior, for example, middle-clicking to close windows, double-click on Superbar window to open similar window and drop files on Superbar icon to open them.
Superbar Savior works with all version of Windows 7, including the Beta and RC release version.

2.    iPhone Drift

iPhone Drift is a web browser emulating the looks of an Apple iPhone. This is a great news for users who loves Apple’s flagship products. Users can easily browse the web, check out how the web page will look like on a real iPhone and many more interesting iPhone-like features, such as rotating the web browser to view it in landscape or portrait mode, use Google Maps and Youtube on its homepage screen and many more.
iPhone Drift comes at a small file size with less than 1MB installation package, plus it works on Windows XP, Vista and 7. Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0 is required to run this software.

3.    Taskbar Eliminator

Aviassin Taskbar Eliminator is a great utility which will simply and efficiently remove the taskbar from Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista and 7.
 
With just the click of a button or a hotkey, the taskbar is disabled from any side of the screen, providing the freedom to use any dock application, increase local computer security, or allow all sorts of Windows customizations. The taskbar can be toggled on and off in real-time, providing the flexibility to quickly view the taskbar to perform an action.
 
The application interface is simple and easy to understand, allowing it to be used by even the most novices of users. Simply press and hold Control+Alt+T to bring up the Preferences window, from which all options can be adjusted. Press and hold Alt + T to immediately show or hide the taskbar directly. It can also be set to run during Windows startup so users can hide it immediately when the log in to their desktops.
 
4.    iCalcy

Another good software for Apple fans who uses Windows: iCalcy looks and acts exactly the same as the iPhone 3G or iPod Touch calculator does, allowing you to perform all standard calculator operations on Windows. iCalcy is a standalone application, meaning that it is portable and so, users don’t have to install it to use it!
 
You can rotate iCalcy into either portrait or landscape orientation, just like an iPhone. Scientific calculation functions are not available, though the team promised that it will be added in later version. Until then, Vista and 7 users wanting scientific calculators are better off with the Windows Calculator.
 
5.    Edgeswap

Aviassin EdgeSwap is a task-switcher for Windows, allowing you to switch between windows simply by moving your cursor to the top left edge of the screen. This creates an entirely unique Windows experience, allowing users to move effortlessly and quickly between their open programs. When in use with Windows Vista or Windows 7, EdgeSwap displays live thumbnail images to choose between open windows, and shows application icons in Windows XP.
 
Just hold your mouse cursor in the top left edge of the screen until the window you wish to open is highlighted, then move your cursor away to open that window.
 
6.    PaintRibbon

Aviassin Paintribbon is a third-party drawing and application for Windows which imitates the Windows 7 Paint interface, utilizing the ribbon interface first seen in Office 2007. Like Windows 7’s Paint, Paintribbon offers users all the basic drawing capabilities including various shapes (line, circle, square and star shapes), different line widths, a variety of fill and stroke colour options plus the ability to move drawn shapes.
 
Paintribbon however, has a few issues that need to be ironed out. Currently the 0.1.5 version of Paintribbon can only open and save .pic (pict) image files, although it is stated that additional file types will be supported in later releases. All buttons present in the ribbon in Windows 7 Paint are displayed in paintribbon so as to replicate the interface, however only a limited number of buttons are fully functional in version 0.1.5.
PaintRibbon works on Windows XP, Vista and 7. Microsoft .NET Framework is required to run the software.

Aviassin Development Team had also opened a forum at their site to encourage user feedbacks and bug report. Currently, my favourite Aviassin software is Edgeswap which I find more convenient than the ALT+ TAB function, especially if my hands are not on the keyboard. All in all, I like where all this team’s software is heading and wish the Aviassin Project a healthy and innovative future!

We know thak 22-OCT-2009 is the launch day of Windows 7: they day when Windows 7 will be publically available though many are already using its pirated RTM and OEM releases. Whatever, there is no doubt Windows 7 is a big leap in Windows history. There are some critics who say Windows 7 is a new cover of Vista. They are not wrong but perfectly wrong. A Personal Review of Avast! v5 Beta II (A Must-Read for Avast! Fan)

I am so busy with life recently that I could not spend much time writing articles, even when I had lots to write about. I still play around with software, though. Recently I downloaded and installed the second test version of Avast! V5 on a virtual machine with Windows XP SP2 installed. I read about feedbacks on the first test version which is quite ok, except that the virus database is not complete.  So when the second release go all-out, I decided to try it myself.

It was a pretty experience. Avast! has not release anything new  for some years but it’s worth the wait, because Avast! v5 is way better than the current 4.8 version on market. Overall, Avast! v5 had improved in these areas:

1.    User Interface (Appearance)

Avast! v5's main page GUI. Second beta's GUI is updated to work smoothly even under high resource usage.

Users who used Avast! before know that Avast! has a pretty ridiculous interface. It feels as though you’re using a media player rather than an antivirus but then it’s official: Avast! ditched the old interface in favour of a more professional one. Even if it’s professional looking now, it doesn’t sacrifice usability. It doesn’t take long for me to learn how to configure the antivirus at all...shall I say, perhaps just 3 to 5 minutes, seriously!
Avast! had also redesigned its logos and icons for v5. Although it feels a bit strange to have that usual blue tray icon gone, the new, orange-crimson one still looks pretty nice (it still spins like the old version!).

The new settings option panel, very unique in design and oh yeah, the function all works correctly so far.

There you are: the new tray icon of Avast! v5. The virus shield outbreak tray icon available in Avast! v4 has been taken out to reduce tray clutter.

2.    Resources Usage

I installed Avast! on a virtual machine. As so, I expect lags and hangs on the virtual machine, as my past experience with antivirus-testing normally end up that way. Surprising though, after installing Avast! v5, it felt as though no antivirus had been installed. I opened task manager to check out its resource usage and I got this incredible result:

Less than 10K of memory used on idle! I allocated 600MB memory for my virtual Windows XP and guess what? There are no lags at all. It’s even better than the current Avast! v4! Norton thought they had hit the performance jackpot with their 2010 version, but apparently Avast! did way better, because Norton 2010 still show signs of lags on the virtual machine while Avast v5 had nearly NONE.

3.    Additional Features (...That Are Working, By The Way!)

Avast! was known for its rather limited security features, since it comes as an all-round security suite even for the free version. But in v5, they added some interesting features which I immediately spotted: customizable right-click context menu scan, screensaver scan, game mode/silent mode, shield traffic graphs and finally, an independent behavioural scanner. Along with the usual shields protection, virus, spyware, heuristic and rootkits scanning, Avast! is now an even more complete security solution.

The many scan options in Avast! v5. Users can now customize their right-click context menu scan option plus the option of letting Avast! scan your PC in screensaver mode.

Avast! v5 gives advanced users the freedom of checking Avast!'s activities with graphed traffics for all shield monitors. Previous versions of Avast!'s shield protection did not have an independent GUI where users can learn how the shields are doing.

I was a bit disappointed to discover that Avast!’s scanning speed was a bit slow (considering that its running on a virtual machine with nothing much to scan), but there’s nothing much to complain when it is still in beta testing stage. Also, i would like a chance to test out the PRO version of Avast! v5, since it comes with an inbuilt firewall and file-virtualization module, which makes things interesting even more.

Murgee Logon Controller: A Logon Bockground-Changer Compatible With Both Windows Vista & 7

Some users are interested in customizing their PC up and down, which includes the logon screen as well. For users not knowing this technical term, logon screen refers to the background image displayed where you logon to your computer during the final part of a Windows startup. The Logon background is displayed regardless of whether your computer is configured to auto logon or not.

I used to share two posts on two different logon screen changers, LogonStudio Vista and Tweaks.com Logon Changer.  While both are fully functional, both have their own limitations. For LogonStudio Vista, it is capable of running with both Vista and 7, but in order to make some of its functions work on 7, you’ll need to do adjustments on its compatibility. Tweaks.com Logon Changer works just perfectly on Windows 7 (with the additional benefit of not tampering with the digital signatures of Windows 7’s system files), but the problem is it is not designed to run on Vista. 

These issues with the two separate logon tools forced me to go out in search for another working and more flexible Logon Changer and mercifully, I came across a really nice one after a full month of search.

Murgee Logon Controller is another logon screen changer like LogonStudio Vista and Tweaks.com Logon Changer, but it works on both Vista and 7 without experiencing any compatibility issues. The software can be used to change Windows 7 or Vista Logon background by selecting default background images from your computer hard disk. The Logon Background can also be specified by browsing to an external image file (bmp, jpg etc.). As the Logon Background is shared by other users of the computer, the software download would require admin rights to run and change the background image of the login screen.

The software is easy to use, with a ribbon interface in place and only two tabs present due to its rather few functions. Users can customize the interface colour by clicking on the large Start button and browse through various picture folders specified. To verify that a logon screen has been changed, users are required to logoff to view the changes. The only problem is its slightly lagging reaction while browsing for folders with images, but that is no serious bug.

Murgee Logon Controller is now one of my favourite logon background changer because of its stability and flexibility between Vista and 7. It is highly recommended to everyone.
